Ju Young Kim Director/ Clinical Professor
Professor Kim received his LL.B. from Seoul National University, passed the Korean Bar in 1986, and finished courses at the Judicial Research & Training Institute of Korean Supreme Court in 1989. He started his career as an attorney at the law firm Kim & Chang, where he specialized in the Fair Trade Act and Commercial Law. He later received LL.M degree at the University of Chicago as a Fulbright scholar. Upon his return to Korea, he opened his own law office, while also serving as Deputy Director of the Economic Reform Committee at the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, a well-known NGO and as the Executive Director of the Center for Good Corporate Governance. Starting in 2000, he joined Hannuri Law Offices as a founding partner, where he provided legal assistance to damaged investors in a number of corporate governance disputes and financial litigation. In that role he served as plaintiff counsel in the successful lawsuits against many Chebol companies and financial institutions such as Daewoo Electronics, Hyundai Securities, Deutsche Bank and Royal Bank of Canada in accounting and securities fraud cases. He began to supervise SNU Law clinical students in 2011 and visited SNU as a Visiting Scholar in 2013. In 2019 he was appointed as the Faculty Director of the Center and is now supervising Supreme Court Advocacy Clinic.
Ra Mi Seo Deputy Director/ Clinical Associate Professor
Professor So received her LL. B. from Korea University, passed the Korean Bar in 2001, and finished courses at the Judicial Research & Training Institute of Korean Supreme Court in 2004. She is a founding member of the GongGam Human Rights Law Foundation—the first dedicated public interest attorneys’ organization. She began her career in 2004, and has led numerous activities in defense of Women’s and Children’s Rights. She has defended countless victims of sexual violence and human trafficking, including who were trafficked across borders for purposes of marriage. She has worked to promote the rights of children adopted overseas, migrant children, and the universal implementation of a birth registration system in South Korea. She started at the SNUPLC in 2019, and has given numerous lectures in the field of Human Rights, public interest lawyering, and how to develop one’s career as a public interest lawyer.
Stephan SonnenbergAssociate Professor
Professor Sonnenberg joined SNU Law’s Faculty in 2020. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, and licensed to practice law in two US jurisdictions as well as England and Wales. Prior to his time at SNU Law, Prof. Sonnenberg taught for eight years in clinics at Harvard and Stanford Law Schools, after which he went to Bhutan as one of the founding faculty for that country’s first and only law school, tasked with the design a robust clinical and experiential learning programme. His clinical work has focused on a range of subjects, including conflict resolution, dispute system design, human rights, humanitarian law, corporate social responsibility and accountability, social enterprise, and international development.
Yong Kuk Lee Clinical Professor
Professor Lee is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. He is admitted to the Bar in the U.S. State of New York and certified as a foreign legal consultant in Korea. He joined Cleary Gottlieb LLC in 1992, where he became a partner in 1999. He dealt mostly with international corporate law, including capital market transactions, mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), and corporate restructuring of Cleary Gottlieb’s own New York headquarters as well as their Hong Kong and Seoul offices. Since 2020, he joined SNU’s Clinical Faculty where he is currently running the International Transaction Clinic.
Hyun Jong Lee Clinical Associate Professor
Professor Lee received his LL.B. from Seoul National University, passed the Korean Bar in 1991, and finished courses at the Judicial Research & Training Institute of Korean Supreme Court in 1994. He was appointed as a judge at the Seoul District Court in 1997, where he continued until 2011. In 2011 he joined the law firm Kim & Chang, where he was in charge of litigation and dispute-based advisory cases. Prof. Lee also lectured SNU students on the preparation of legal documents, civil record practice, and civil litigation. Prof. Lee joined SNU’s Clinical Faculty in 2020, where he is currently running the Consumer Disputes Clinic.
Nam Hee KimClinical Associate Professor
Professor Kim received her LL.B. from Seoul National University, passed the Korean Bar in 2000, and finished courses at the Judicial Research & Training Institute of Korean Supreme Court in 2003. She worked as a lawyer for the law firm Bae, Kim & Lee from 2003 to 2011. In 2011, she left her corporate practice and started working as the director of Social Welfare and Fiscal Reform team of the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, where she worked to promote the public interest by protecting the social rights of vulnerable children, the elderly, and socio-economically disadvantaged communities. Prof. Kim joined SNU’s Clinical Faculty in 2020, where she supervises the Community Legal Aid Clinic, and also serves as a career counselor.
In Young ChoClinical Associate Professor
Professor Cho received her LL.B. from Seoul National University, passed the Korean Bar in 2000, and finished courses at the Judicial Research & Training Institute of Korean Supreme Court in 2003. After she was appointed as a judge for the Seoul Northern District Court in 2003, she was serving as a judge until 2020. Prof. Cho joined SNU’s Clinical Faculty in 2020, and she is currently running the Civil Practice Clinic.
So Eun LeeClinical Assistant Professor
Professor Lee is a graduate of Yonsei University and SNU Law. She passed the Korean Bar Exam and also earned a S.J.D. from SNU Law in 2018. From 2014 to 2019, she worked as SNU Law’s Head of Legal Support Services. Since 2020, she has joined SNU’s Clinical Faculty.
Jin Sook OhClinical Instructor
Ms. Oh graduated from the Air Force Academy and was honorably discharged as a captain of the Air Force after 5 years of service. She graduated from Chungbuk National University Law School and passed the Korean Bar Exam. She served as an activist with the Cheongju Labor and Human Rights Center, where she worked full time as a public defender in North Chung-Cheong Province, providing legal support for migrant workers, disabled women, vulnerable workers. She also conducted numerous know-your-rights trainings for youth on labor and human rights issues, as well as providing legal support to local civic groups. In 2018, she took a position in the legal office of the Korea Railroad Corporation. One year later she joined SNUPLC as a clinical instructor, where she runs the legal aid, Public Service law practice, and pro bono activities.
Jae Won KimClinical Instructor
Mr. Kim graduated from SNU Law. After passing the bar exam, he worked for the Ministry of National Defense as an Air Force legal officer. After being honorably discharged, he worked for the law firm JiPyong on matters having to do with finance, insurance, securities, trusts and the educational sector. Mr. Kim joined SNUPLC in 2020 as a clinical instructor and is also in charge of public interest career counselling.
Ji Young YoonClinical Instructor
Ms. Yoon graduated from Yonsei University Law School. After passing the bar exam, she began her career as a lawyer with the law firm Chamjin, where she worked on a range of matters, both civil and criminal. She also served as a public defender at Seoul’s Central and Eastern District Courts as well as the Supreme Court. She joined SNUPLC as a clinical instructor in 2020.
