Difficult Conversation Clinic

About

The Difficult Conversations Clinic trains students to think about those difficult — “sensitive” — issues that tend to divide us as members of a community. Whether it be with regard to divisive human rights issues, politics, culture, or social issues – it is undeniable that many societies are increasingly unable to prevent people from polarizing into increasingly self-centered communities. Polarizing politics, extremism, and the influence of social media may be partly to blame. This course trains students to focus on the challenge of reversing this trend, of building bridges, and of having difficult conversations about those “sensitive” topics. Students learn to do this in a series of workshops where they personally engage in, coach, and observe others having such conversations, with the objective of ultimately becoming more confident around these topics– as future lawyers, future diplomats, and current and future members of thriving communities.
